Effect of Extreme Weather Events on Contaminant Transport From Urban Run-Off to a Fjord System

چکیده
Urbanization has resulted in increased contaminant run-off densely populated areas. Climate change is expected to result a higher frequency of extreme weather events including torrential rainfall and storms. The levels polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), chlorinated paraffins (CPF) selected metals, small urban river were monitored during snow-melting quantify the contribution contamination load receiving waters inner Oslo fjord, Norway. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) was characterized with respect contaminants as well toxic response using battery bioassays. flux from fjord quantified assessed relative sediment data. Historic data for near-shore samples used document input. results show clear episodic emitted fjord. main historic input found be PAH pyrogenic sources like coal wood burning traffic. A significant reduction level observed since 1980s. measured CPF consistent on-going societal use despite ban on short chain imposed Norway 2002.

Analysis of Weather Generators: Extreme Events
Stochastic weather generators (WGs) are often used to simulate synthetic weather time series based on observed statistical properties in a particular location. Most studies evaluate WG skill based on average properties. Our objective is to assess how the WGs performs in simulating extremes, especially high precipitation amounts. We analyzed 13 different WGs using two parallel approaches: extrem...

The risks of extreme weather events are typically being estimated, by federal agencies and others, with historical frequency data assumed to reflect future probabilities. These estimates may not yet have adequately factored in the effects of past and future climate change, despite strong evidence of a changing climate. They have relied on historical data stretching back as far as fifty or a hun...

We estimate the effect of extreme weather on life expectancy in the US. Using high frequency mortality data, we find that both extreme heat and extreme cold result in immediate increases in mortality. However, the increase in mortality following extreme heat appears entirely driven by near-term displacement, while the increase in mortality following extreme cold is long lasting. The aggregate e...
